Trincomalee may be a port city on the East Coast of Sri Lanka . The city is located on a peninsula, which divides the inner and outer ports. Trinkomali is an angular version of the Tamil word Tirukkonamalai (meaning “prince of the sacred mountain”); It is a mountain that lies at the end of an artificial natural land. It is one of the main languages of Tamil language. Gak, also known as Gokanna or Gokarna, is a sea port that played a major role in the maritime and international trade history of Sri Lanka.

The Bay of Trincomalee provides security and is open to all types of sea boats in all weather conditions. The beach is used for recreational activities such as surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching. The city is famous for being the largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka. It is a serious naval base and a Sri Lanka Air Force base.

Religious significance

Trincomalee is considered as a very sacred place by the Tamils and Sinhalese. Trincomalee and its surroundings are both Hindu and Buddhist sites of historical significance. These places are sacred to Hindus and Buddhists.

It is said that King Mahasena destroyed the Shiva Temple and built a Mahayana Devalaya on top of it. Theravada Buddhists have maintained a peaceful relationship with the Hindus, despite the historical tension between the two ethnic groups founded by kings such as Mahasena.

Colonial-era Trincomalee

Its recent history has shaped the strategic importance of Trincomalee. The great European powers competed for the port’s expertise. It was held by the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the English and there were many sea battles nearby.


Trincomalee is that the fifth largest natural harbor within the world. Trincomalee on the map does not have a large population and the development is low. However it is used as a commercial port.
